Day 1 Notes by Ramana Reddy
The program is initiated at 8 AM with the welcome address by Dr M. Blummel, Global Leader, ILRI, Hyderabad followed by introduction of participants to each other. The participants moved to the Manmool, ICRISAT, Hyderabad to see the research facilities and feed processing unit established by the ILRI. Then proceeded to the ILRI lab and observed the lab facilities and returned to the conference room.
Some of the points that emerged on the first day discussions (28th April) during the workshop:
- Availability of quality fodder seeds is a major issue as there are hardly any agency capable of producing and supplying seeds timely.
- Integrating technology into value chains working with partners - interface is very critical.
- The scale of integrating the whole feed approach into the value chain is a major issue of concern.
- Predicting the future scenarios- currency fluctuations, policies is uncertain and hence these have to be factored in to keep the program flexible.
- Value chain analysis should be critical enough to take care of the unexpected changes-Resilience
- Where do we draw the line as to what extent should we get involved with the partners in development activities (science approach versus development activities)
- We should provide the role of knowledge partners for the different value chains
The platforms for CRP 3.7 should include
- Feed Technology Platform (Research team)
- Innonvation platform (to look at whole value chain)
- Linking Technology platform with other CRPs
- Social Science
- Forage specialist
Strengths of the various partners were assessed and listed CIAT – Strong GIS, forage breeding, experience in forage planting, forage gene bank, experience in forage value chain work including livestock. Weakness- lacks critical mass (people& skills), regional issues- less people and feed economics, limited knowledge on geographic area
ICARDA – Strong dry land feeding systems for sheep, seed data base, very strong on socio-economic aspect, strong linkages with farmers.
ILRI – Strong: Feed development as one contributor to Value chain, food feed crops, public private partnership, looking at feed issues along the value chain, experience of working with large partners, understanding feed use dynamics, public private partnership, post harvest technology, livelihoods expertise, social science, infrastructure.
World Fish – Strong: Skills in fish nutrition, value chain, country context, links to work on human nutrition, technologies in aqua culture system, GIS skills, ecosystem and life cycle analysis, agri business, strong in developing producers organization,
