Livestock and Fish health flagship synthesis workshop Nairobi, Kenya 31 October and 1 November 2016

Synthesis Animal Health flagship, revised version August 2016 The animal health story book

The aim of the flagship synthesis is to develop a set of e stories that demonstrate how the AH flagship has worked across clusters, value chains and partner institutions to achieve impact. The idea is to find a way to link up the different bits and pieces produced during phase 1. Using 4 different stories in different settings with different key species will allow us to showcast the different tools and explain how the different elements are linked up. This should be followed by a discussion/lessons learnt chapter and outline the way forward.

The stories will be set up around 4 farmers with health problems in their livestock/fish. Using these examples, we then discuss how the different clusters contribute to find solutions that work for the farmers. This allows us to present assessment tools to identify and prioritize constraints, R4D approaches to find solutions with the livestock keepers, vaccine and diagnostics research and where and how these tools are used, and finally, showing how solutions are made accessible to livestock producers.

The preliminary selection of stories for the animal health story book: - Cattle producer in Tanzania: main focus on ECF: ITM and vaccine development, ITM up-scaling, if including reproduction diseases in the dairy sector, we can make a link to India. We can link to ongoing ECF work in Kenya and Ethiopia as examples what we do in other countries where ECF is present and in countries that are at risk. Maybe include CBPP? - Pig producer in Uganda: ASF research in the field and in the lab, discuss impact of other production and zoonotic diseases, link with A4NH - Fish in Egypt or Bangladesh (Mohan to propose details) - Small ruminants in Ethiopia: probably focusing on herd health and impact of endemic diseases with lots of results on respiratory and reproductive diseases from cluster 1 (incl. gender), bring in mycoplasma research (CCPP), discuss animal health service delivery (example coenurosis control research that started this year).

There is still room for discussion on how the stories should be presented. Either nicely written up, with links provided to scientific papers and other outputs, or/and as a web-based tool to guide the people through or as a white-board story. In any case we will need photographs illustrating the field and lab work related to the different stories. If feasible, we should make short videos of farmers explaining their challenges, with a web-based tool, links can be provided. In a book/documents the online version can also include links to papers and videos.

A recurrent issue, and a critique in the early years of the CRP, has been that there is a disconnect between upstream and downstream research. Thus thinking about how the 4 flagship clusters are integrated and relate to farmers’ problems should help us to reflect on how the gap between upstream and downstream research can be bridged. There could potentially a publication coming out of these reflections with recommendations and examples of best (or at least good) practice. To develop the stories and sketch out eventual web-tool with the CMK team a 2 day workshop) will be held 31.10/1.11.2016 at Sovereign Suites outside Nairobi.

Possible story outline: example Tanzania Start describing the situation of a smallholder family in Tanzania in an area where ECF is a problem, and probably best in a site where ITM2scale is implemented - Describe the production system - The challenges faced, emphasis on health - How production losses affect the household, impact on livelihood - Think about how activities in all 4 clusters of the AH flagship relate to that story

  • How does the assessment work help to identify priorities, role of gender
  • Herd level interventions: any impact?
  • Vaccine development for ECF, ITM research, maybe CBPP research? Diagnostic tools?
  • Delivery systems: ITM2 scale
  • Comparisons to other countries: insights from elsewhere that might be relevant for the Tanzania setting?

- Conclusion: has our work made any difference or laid the foundation to make a difference to this household in the future? - Lessons learnt? - Recommendations, priorities for future work?

Participants ECF: Henry, (Vish at board meeting), Nick, Phil, (Lucilla in ASF group), plus inputs from mycoplasma group ASF: Michel, Lucilla, Ed, maybe Kristina to bring in links with A4NH Small ruminants: Barbara, Biruk, Hiwot, Anne/Flavio, Fish: Mohamed Fathi (Egypt), Elise CKM: James and Paul
