Tropentag workshop

Empowering smallholders through multi-stakeholder platforms and value chains

Vienna, 19 September 2016

Background

For the past 5 years, CGIAR Livestock and Fish program has worked in a solution-driven approach to agricultural research. This combines technical upstream interventions in animal health, animal feeding and animal genetics with multi-stakeholder interventions with communities and along value chains. Special attention is given to inclusive value chain development, by and for the poor, targeting women and people facing environmental and public health issues. This workshop will synthesize and explore experiences and lessons, focusing on opportunities for livestock and fish value chains to contribute to food security, livelihoods and empowerment towards a fairer, more sustainable world.

Objectives

Critically examine 5 years livestock and fish research to help shape future research for development investments

Agenda

0900 Welcome and objectives Shirley Tarawali
0915-0930 Livestock and Fish CRP: An experiment in accelerating inclusive research for development
Present the Livestock and Fish CRP as a model testing several hypotheses in xx countries. NOT business as usual: value chain transformation plus technology development; with partners; for and by the poor; multi-stakeholder engagement and platforms; accelerating research to generate impact at scale, strong gender focus. Lay out key aspects of the approach; hypotheses and assumptions. NO assessment yet.
Tom Randolph
0930-1010 BUS-STOPS 1: Living Evidence

Barbara – empowering community based livestock development
Malcolm – embedding action research in a big development intervention with close development partners
Parallel stands/posters to share insights, results and lessons, and solicit inputs.
