Vietnam Site Selection
Vietnam Site Selection
Definition of a site: Two or three villages or a commune where we will pilot test interventions at farm level. The rest of the value chain could be located outside the boundaries of the site.
Three systems: rural to rural; rural to urban; urban to urban
- How many sites do we select per system? At least two, otherwise confounded effect with site
- For the ACIAR project, we may work in only two systems
- Existing projects
- ACIAR (not yet funded). 2 ‘regions’ already selected but no specific site
- IFAD CIAT project (started Feb 2012). Agro Enterprise Development Process (AEDP) will identify the project VCs and ‘sites’. Hopefully, there will be 1 pig site.
- CRP 3.7 (limited funding for strategic activities)
- LIFSAP (Ministry)- specific districts in the ACIAR project provinces
- Process
GIS characterization using agreed criteria: ACIAR suggested regions; pig density; market conditions; poverty level; etc…. * Method: overlay GIS layers of these criteria, validated at a stakeholders workshop * Output: two or three 'regions' (province) selected Scoring of sites -within these regions using a detailed checklist used to collect site-level information * Method: develop a checklist for pig system (in collaboration with the Uganda pig VC); collect the required data for e.g. ten sites that will be scored * Output: two or so ‘sites’ selected within the two or three ‘regions’ selected (those with highest score). The sites are validated at a stakeholders’ workshop.
- Next step: agree on criteria for the GIS characterization
Tanzania used three criteria
- Human population density
- Farming system - only mixed farming
- Cattle density
Discussion on criteria for Vietnam pig * ACIAR province selection
- pig density, poverty...not using GIS
- we will run the analysis using GIS with the following criteria: pig density, poverty level and population density. We can also include market access
